was placed administratively under the Department of Social Services in 1967, and Ab Harris was employed as the first Director of the Division of Indian Affairs. With the death of Ab Harris, Bruce Parry became the succeeding director. Frank J. Allen served as administrative assistant to the original committee, to furnish the necessary followthrough in the expenditure of income from the approximately $5 million from the Aneth oil money, on behalf of the San Juan Navajo. One of the tasks inherited by the State Board, under John, involved the development of a plan for the use of the funds the Indian Claims Commission decreed should be made available to the Southern Paiutes as a settlement of their land claims against the United States. John continued to serve as chairman of the Board of Indian Affairs until September, 1971. No doubt the time given to service on these citizens committees by a qualified attorney with experience in Indian matters would have had a monetary value in the tens of thousands of dollars, but John had always been willing to give this kind of service, sometimes under some very trying circumstances. John also served as a member of the Council on Criminal Justice Administration under Governor Clyde. He had worked closely with the Utah Peace Officers Association while Henry H. Blood was Governor, and during his tenure as Assistant U.S. Attorney. In 1940, he addressed the association on the topic, 'The Officer on the Witness Stand." At that time he said: 1 have appreciated the acquaintances and friends made in this association and in my work with you on the witness stand. I should like to see your profession recognized and accredited for what it is. With all his involvements, John somehow seemed to find time to go the extra mile, whether he was working in the capacity of an uncompensated citizen or as a paid attorney representing a client.
