Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
recognized professional rapport with key Utah bankers and United States Government agencies, served as a catalyst during arrangements by which those depositors with accounts in excess of the limit of FDIC insurance would suffer no loss. T ~ l y the citizens of Coalville, Summit County and the , State of Utah owe a dept of profound gratitude to Mr. John S. Boyden. Without his personal interest and assistance in the recent bank crisis many individuals and business enterprises could have been financially destroyed. John wrote to David in response:
.. .There are some things in this life that cannot be evaluated in terms of money. One of these things is the cherished experience I have had with your father and the members of his family. Whatever I may have done to help solve the Coalville Bank situation 1 regard as an opportunity to be of some little assistance to some of my closest friends. It was a pleasure to work with you. ..
Along with other citizen committees John was asked to give service with Indian programs in the state. He served under Governor Clyde as chairman of a committee to administer the funds accumulated from oil development in the Aneth Extension to the Navajo Reservation, to be used for the education of Navajo children, and for other oumoses. About 1962-63 it was suggested, and Govemor Clyde recognized the need, to have some state organization consider the requirements of other Indian groups in the state. What was first called the "Governor's Commission on Indian Affairs" was established by Govemor Clyde for that purpose, and John's committee for the San Juan Navajo became part of the new commission that was to work with all Indian groups in the state. This commission was continued under Governor Rampton, and with the reorganization of the executive departments it became the State Board of Indian Affairs, with John as chairman of that board. It
