He had a deep love for his country that resulted in a special kind of patriotism. He reminded political leaders at various levels to remember the proclamations for occasions such as Citizenship Day and Constitution Week. The feeling for the responsibility of citizens to give service motivated him to accept numerous appointments on unpaid citizens committees and commissions. Here are a few examples of h civic i experiences: John was on the executive committee of an advisory committee to report to the Mayor and Salt Lake City Commissioners on the need for "Capital Improvements for Salt Lake City." Committees on Public Buildings and Ground; Sewers, Waterworks and Streets; Parks and Recreation: and Finance were set up under the executive committee to make recommendations concerning particular kinds of improvements. John was vice chairman (Mitch Melich, chairman) of a twelvemember citizens committee to make "a 6-month study of the conditions and needs of higher education in this state" at the request of the Coordinating Council of Higher Education. When the First National Bank of Coalville was in difficulty, John offered his services. This letter from Colonel Floyd David Williams, published in The Summit County Bee, and John's response to David tell a story of his willingness to make his professional services available on behalf of friends and community. Colonel Williams wrote in November of 1969: The purpose of this letter is to publicly recognize the dedicated incisive service rendered the depositors of the former First National Bank of Coalville by Mr. John S. Boyden, Attorney. He represented no person or persons or organizations - just the affected people, the community and his State. The fact that depositors suffered no financial loss is attributable, in no small measure, to Mr. Boyden's deeprooted personal interest in the welfare of the people of Coalville, Summit County, and the State of Utah.
