Three Score and T e n in Retrospect
insisted that I sit in another car. Orpha arrived before we all left for the hospital at Keams Canyon. 1 remember her expressed fear and anxiety as she sought to learn of the extent of our injuries. She didn't know which one of us was being taken in the ambulance. Upon being informed, she came to the car where I was sitting and accompanied me to the hospital. Due to the serious nature of Clyde's injuries. Joseph M. Lucero, administrative manager at the agency, recruited twenty vehicles to light the airstrip and Clyde was flown to the St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix. My injuries were only superficial. The next day an insurance investigator came to the place where we were staying to talk with me. I told him that I had no injuries requiring any further attention. During the course of the interview he asked to see my knees. On one knee there was a little pink spot, smaller than my little fingernail. The investigator said he would not have believed it because the instrument board on the superintendent's car involved in the accident was obviously bent, leaving deep impressions where my knees had forcefully contacted it. I knew I had been blessed. After we returned home, my good friend, Reginald 0.Curry, a former chairman, and then an executive employee of the Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation, told me of his experience which I asked him to reduce to writing. It is reproduced above, without alteration. The Lord has been kind to me all the days of my life. My supplications and prayers have been repeatedly granted. On several important occasions my requests have been denied but years later 1came to know the denials were always definitely in my best interest. I now pray that I have been, and am continuing to, at least partially fulfilling the purposes for which I have been granted the privilege of coming to this earth.
