Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
within the joint use area of the reservation established by the Executive Order of December 16, 1882, and lands lying within the reservation created by the Act of June 14, 1934, and for other purposes. The administrative problem of removing the Navajo Indians from land partitioned to the Hopi Indians remained, and further court action would be required to determine what belonged to the Hopis within the area enclosed by the 1934 Act designating the boundary for the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. The Hopi missed John's leadership and devotion to their cause as was eloquently testified to by the former Chairman of the Hopi Tribal Council, Mr. Abbott Sekaquaptewa in his remarks at John's funeral. O n June 11, 1980, the Hopi Tribal council unanimously adopted the following resolution: WHEREAS, John S. Boyden, Sr., has in this year of 1980 passed his fortieth year of faithful and dedicated service to the Hopi Tribe and the Hopi people as Claims and General Counsel; and WHEREAS, for nearly half of this period of time, Mr. Boyden unselfishly and willingly expended his time and energy on behalf of the Tribe without compensation and in a manner far beyond the call of duty; and WHEREAS, as a result of Mr. Boyden's labors, the Hopi Tribe has regained nearly one million acres of its ancestral lands and is on the threshold of recovering significant additional areas of traditional lands which constitute a large portion of the Hopi Tribal Inheritance; and WHEREAS, Mr. Boyden has been able to accomplish this great work under the most adverse conditions, yet in faithful compliance with the traditions of the Tribal elders among whom now he has earned a special place, NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Hopi Tribal Council, that the Hopi Tribe hereby expresses its most grateful
