skills as an advocate and orator for the Hopi cause. His obvious sincerity and great vigor spellbound the committee members and brought tears to the eyes of even casual obsewers. Several Senators and Congressmen as well as old staffers often commented to me that they had never heard such moving words or witnessed such effective advocacy. The following poem was read by John to the United States Senate Interior Committee and was later published in the report of the hearings: Justice is no eagle that commands the mesa heights It is an egg; fertile, fragile possibility of rights. Hold it warm within your Council, Beneath Congressional wing; Expediency has no ardor From which righteousness may spring. Come the day of purification It may live, self nurtured, free. But here neighbors covet lands Where is the equity? In this world the many have force to crush the few; Only thoughtfulness and courage can prompt What's right to do. W a y out on the desert, Where the sands the winds do blow 0 careful, Mr. Congressman, Justice is in embryo.
