Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
(Note: three more grandchildren were added to the seventeen after this day) John composed a poem to use in his funeral sermon for George R. Hill, under whom he had served on the Sunday School General Board. It was later published in the Bonneville Stake History, A Tradition of Excellence, in the Yale Second Ward Chapter to which he contributed. This poem is included at the end of the "Full of Years and Honor" chapter of this book, and provides valuable insight into his feelings about life and death. Richard L. Evans said, "Perhaps the most important difference in men is what they do with their time when they don't have to do anything." It is obvious from John's hobbies that he was a reflective, sensitive and purposeful man who made conscious daily choices in determining the direction of his life.
