John wrote this while on a plane returning from an assignment for the Sunday School General Board (it was finished at home): I told my friend, "You're looking sad. Were I to judge your state of mind I'd say your outlook's very bad; Your thoughts d o not seem kind." He showed me where his car was bent; His temper suffered, too. An Indian in his pathway went As Indians sometimes do. He lamented of a drunken crew, A listless, lazy race. The bad in them he thought he knew. "They set the devil's pace. You can't believe a word they say. The squaw insults the God who made her. If they make a bargain any way, You'll discover an Indian trader.' The sun of day went down. The moon came pale in Indian style. A night of rest erased the frown; Even red men seemed worthwhile. I heard a chief apprise his son Like any say that's wise.
