So I accept the charge You're living in the past! John wrote this while on an airplane returning from a business trip to Spnngfield, Illinois, for Ideal National Insurance: I've hungered for adventure, the zest of foreign air, Yet I know I'm not a nomad, a man that doesn't care. For home I have a yearning, when I've been away so long. The simple and familiar lure me from the city throng. Does this mean I am a malcontent, the fidgety, restless kind, A shifting, changing fellow with a freely flowing mind? What's wrong with being a dreamer if it doesn't spoil your sleep7 Where's the initiative in a person if he follows liie the sheep? It seems there is a measure, a sort of simple test: In longing for the better have I overlooked the best? In my own estimation I gain stature as a man If in planning for tomorrow I am pleased with where I am. In contemplating what he would say at his mother-in-law's funeral, John penned these lines the morning of her service (September2,1968). It canied great meaning for family members. Mom I need no front page story, No monument of stone, But oh, a little of myself Left in a grandchild of my own.
