Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
Again we both thank you for your hospitality, your friendship and example, and may the Lord continue to bless you in all of the things that you do. Sincerely yours, Sterling
Poetry
For Christmas of 1977, Carmen collected many of John's poems and had them bound in a booklet entitled, Beyond My Dreams, the Semi-Complete Works of John 5. Boyden, Sr., Poet. The introduction and many of the poems are included here: Whenever a special occasion arose for one of the children, we would usually ask Dad to make up a poem. Then we would sit patiently while he stared into space awaiting inspiration. Sooner or later we would ask, "Dad, has the poet come?" While most of these on-the-spot compositions have been lost, the following pages are evidence that "the poet" did come on many occasions. It should be pointed out that Dad's interest in writing began early. In 1919, at the age of 13, he cecame editor of the Lone Scout magazine, The Coalville Tepee. His photo albums are reminders of the many trips he took to the hills with camera and pen in hand, and we all remember the captions on his photographs when they were later mounted artistically on black pages. Picture in his distinctive white lettering: "Where water lilies bloom and die with but few witnesses to their lovely lives" "Where the hush of the night spends its days" Whoever went with us on one of the family trips to Arizona or up on the range will remember Dad quoting Shakespeare or some other author appropriate to the moment, and we appreciate the special part that Dad's recitation and composition of poetry played in our childhood.
