Three Score and Ten in Retrospect
weekends at home. It probably was in the fall of those same years I learned that dazzling orange Oriental Poppies should be transplanted while dormant in August. A subscription to the magazine Better Homes and Gardens furnished garden tips and sentiments. Someone captivated by nature's wonders once wrote in that magazine, To dig and delve in nice, clean dirt Can do a mortal little hurt. Who works with roses soon will find Their fragrance budding in his mind. And minds that sprout with roses free, Oh, that's the sort of mind for me. This bit of verse 1 still remember, and it furnishes a suitable transition from a "garden know-how" statement to an expression of a "garden know-why ." Recently I've heard of people who contend that singing and talking to flowers stimulates the flowers' growth and enhances their beauty. I have always believed that one can learn more from listening than from talking, so I resort to listening to the plants. Dirty fingernails and mud patches on my knees can add little to my spiritual growth. Inspired poets are proficient translators of the songs and messages of the flowers. I call on them to give expression to the things I hear. Flowers are like human beings in their differences, so much so that I marvel at their inexhaustible variations. It has been said that pansies are for thoughts while lilacs are for memories. Just look a pansy in the face. Who knows what thoughts may come? Lilacs, like yellow roses, carry me back to boyhood days. Their fragrance and beauty carried tender messages from one generation to another. If you know the flowers well, anticipation of their annual debut adds luster to a dark and rainy day.
